Living Out God’s Order in the Church

Dear Church Family,

This past Sunday, we returned to one of the more challenging passages in Scripture—1 Timothy 2:11-15. It’s a portion of the Bible that, frankly, many pastors prefer to avoid. But we can’t and we shouldn’t. As we reminded ourselves, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching…” (2 Tim 3:16). The question isn’t whether it’s hard—it is—but whether we will humbly submit ourselves to God’s Word even when it runs against the grain of culture.

The heart of Paul’s teaching in this passage centers on the created order and God’s design for how His church is to function. Paul calls women to learn with quietness and submission, not because they are less capable—far from it! In fact, as I said, women often outshine men in intellect, communication, and faithfulness. This isn’t about superiority or value. Men and women are equally made in the image of God (Gen 1:27) and are equally one in Christ (Gal 3:28). But God, in His wisdom, established a specific order for the home and the church.

At its core, this teaching is about *submission*—a word that’s tough to embrace in today’s world. But let’s not forget: the most submissive person to ever walk the earth was Jesus. He submitted to the Father’s will all the way to the cross. Submission in Scripture is never about inferiority—it’s about trust, order, and obedience.

What Paul prohibits here is not women’s influence or ministry but the authoritative role of preaching and teaching over men within the gathered church. This is not a statement about a woman’s value, intelligence, or gifting. It's a calling for men to step up and lead as Christ did—with sacrificial, faithful, understanding, and servant-hearted love (Eph. 5:25). That kind of leadership makes submission not only possible but beautiful.

We ended with this: apart from Christ, we can’t live this out. It’s too hard, too counter-cultural, too offensive to the modern ear. But by God’s grace and through His Spirit, we can trust His Word, even when it’s hard. Church, let’s deepen our faith, not dilute our convictions. God’s Word doesn’t change because culture does.

With love and grace,

Pastor Daryl
